News Views News Note: I’m writing this in Saskatoon in a hotel, and since Acadia repossessed my faculty laptop (ah, what the hell, might as well throw shade on every possible university in this edition) I have to write on the computer in the lobby and it has Windows 8: Hellscape and also shuts off […]

October 17, 2015 By El Jones 5 Comments

News Views News 1. “Guess you’re staying in Ontario.” Discuss. That’s an inside King’s joke in the headline there. You’ll have to have like $8,630 a year to get it though if you didn’t already. “The board of governors at the University of King’s College’s in Halifax has approved a proposal that opens the door to […]

News Views Footnotes News 1. God, isn’t it enough that MacKay keeps coming here? “During a campaign event in Dartmouth, N.S., Friday, [Jason] Kenney, a Conservative candidate in the Oct. 19 election in the Calgary Midnapore riding, ruled out any move to revoke the citizenship of serious criminals such as mass murderers or child predators, insisting the practice would be […]

September 26, 2015 By El Jones 6 Comments

News Views Footnotes News 1. If Fox News were covering this story… I like whale news. This is like my fourth whale in the harbour news story since I started doing the Saturday Examiner. But since coming to the US, now I see I’ve been covering these seemingly innocent stories ALL WRONG. SHOCKING NEWS THAT […]

Questionable Hate: Morning File, Saturday, September 19, 2015

September 19, 2015 By El Jones 5 Comments

News Views News 1. Autumn for Hitler “Police are looking for a suspect in a Dartmouth property damage incident they believe may have been motivated by hate.” “May have?” That sounds like the evidence is questionable. Some obscure reference, perhaps? Perhaps just a harmless tribute to the Dukes of Hazzard? Hmmm.  Let’s take a look: […]

Were We Drinking? Morning File, Saturday, September 12, 2015

September 12, 2015 By El Jones 4 Comments

News Views Footnotes News Today I’m trying out a new thing called “Ask an International Writer,” where I read headlines and stories about Halifax to writers from around the world and ask the question, “Is this normal? Does this happen in your country?” (Okay, technically that’s two questions.) 1. Someone call 911, because HRM is […]

Difficult Conversations: Morning File, Saturday, September 5, 2015

September 5, 2015 By El Jones 7 Comments

News News 1.  Thoughts on Tynes Last week I wrote about what I felt were double-standards in the treatment of Stephen Tynes by Dalhousie. On Tuesday, Tim emailed me with the article about Tynes plotting a shooting at Dalhousie and asked me if I wanted space to comment. Unfortunately, I’m in Iowa and without much […]

August 29, 2015 By El Jones 4 Comments

News Views News 1. Dal Lousy It seems so straightforward.  A medical student utters threats and is charged and banned from campus. Good job keeping us safe, Dalhousie! Oh no, wait. Would this be the African Nova Scotian student who was charged with animal cruelty and immediately suspended from medical school even though the charges […]

The Tideline, with Tara Thorne

Brian Borcherdt. Photo: Anna Edwards-Borcherdt

Brian Borcherdt came of age in Yarmouth in the 1990s. When he arrived in Halifax, the city’s famous music scene was already waning, and worse, the music he made was rejected by the cool kids anyway. After decades away from Nova Scotia, he and his young family have settled in the Annapolis Valley, where he’ll zoom in to chat with Tara about his band Holy Fuck’s endlessly delayed tour, creating the Dependent Music collective, and the freedom and excitement of the improvised music he’s making now. Plus: Bringing events back in 2021.

The Tideline is advertising-free and subscriber-supported. It’s also a very good deal at just $5 a month. Click here to support The Tideline.

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
