News 1. Northern Pulp Mill is a stinking mess The Chronicle Herald reports that mill emissions have become unbearable for residents of Pictou this year, and no technical solution will be implemented until May. And while Environment Minister concedes the mill is malfunctioning, “he has no intention of forcing it to shut down despite public complaints about the emissions […]

The take away news from yesterday’s council meeting is that the Forum and Centennial Arenas were saved, a new Dartmouth 4-pad arena will be constructed, and four other single ice pad arenas will be closed: Lebrun,  Devonshire, Gray, and Bowles. But before getting into those specifics, the whys and the wherefores, let’s step back and...

July 30, 2014 By Tim Bousquet 4 Comments

News 1. The Forum is saved I’ll have more on this in a council recap later today, but the short of it is that Halifax council yesterday rejected a staff proposal to “dispose of” the Forum and build a new four-pad arena at CFB. Instead, council agreed with the Halifax Forum Community Association’s proposal to build a […]

Lazy journalism: Morning File, Tuesday, July 29, 2014

July 29, 2014 By Tim Bousquet 4 Comments

News 1. The CBC publishes a weasely, unfair, untrue, and sensationalist attack on workers CBC filed a Freedom of Information request for details about provincial employees’ sick days, which is fair enough: a thorough look at employee health is a proper journalistic subject. But the resulting article is framed unfairly. “Nova Scotia government workers some of the […]

Eastern passage development, Khyber & Forum: Halifax council preview, July 29, 2014 meeting

July 28, 2014 By Tim Bousquet

Money Dexter construction awards I’ve been keeping an on-going chronicle of tenders awarded to Dexter Construction. I am not implying that there is anything improper in these awards, but rather I’m just pointing out how very much public money they receive, far more than any other company. This week $1,122,638.79 for the replacement of curbs...

Review of investigation into Holly Bartlett’s death criticizes Halifax police actions

July 25, 2014 By Tim Bousquet

A review of the Halifax police investigation into the death of Holly Bartlett finds that “based on the evidence presented to the reviewers,” her death was accidental. The report, however, goes on to fault the police department’s investigation, noting that the investigating officers jumped to a conclusion early on, before collecting all the evidence, and then kept...

July 25, 2014 By Tim Bousquet 9 Comments

News 1. Province subsidizes transportation In the past couple of days, the province has made two announcements concerning transportation spending: the government will give $2.1 million towards the operation of the Yarmouth ferry, and it will give $2 million to Halifax Transit dedicated to capital expenditures—buying new buses, installing smart meters, building new terminals, etc. One of the […]

July 24, 2014 By Tim Bousquet

Tensions were high at the beginning of last night’s public consultation over how to replace the Africville dog park, but as the meeting progressed dog owners and city staff seemed to zero in on a possible solution agreeable to all: A new, large and fenced dog park at the Mainland Common. To back up, former residents...

Episode #21 of The Tideline, with Tara Thorne is published.

The young R&B artist Keonté Beals — Tara’s former NSCC student, by the way — started out singing in church in North Preston and performing popular covers before digging into who he is an artist. On his debut album KING, he sings about love, loyalty, and authenticity. He zooms in for a chat about its creation, his children’s book, and how not even a pandemic can keep him down.

Uncover: Dead Wrong

In 1995, Brenda Way was brutally murdered behind a Dartmouth apartment building. In 1999, Glen Assoun was found guilty of the murder. He served 17 years in prison, but steadfastly maintained his innocence. In 2019, Glen Assoun was fully exonerated.

Halifax Examiner founder and investigative journalist Tim Bousquet has followed the story of Glen Assoun's wrongful conviction for over five years. Now, Bousquet tells that story as host of Season 7 of the CBC podcast series Uncover: Dead Wrong.
